Knicks Interested In Jason Kidd, Ime Udoka; Johnnie Bryant, Jay Wright 'Presumed' To Be Candidates

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jun 4, 2025 5:09 am

The New York Knicks do not appear to have a succession plan to replace Tom Thibodeau as head coach, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Jay Wright and Cavs' assistant Johnnie Bryant are "presumed" to be likely candidates for the role.

Bryant is currently a finalist for the Suns' head coach job.

The Knicks also have interest in Ime Udoka and Jason Kidd. The Rockets would reject any interview requests from the Knicks.

It's been reported that the decision to fire Thibodeau was lead by Leon Rose and approved by James Dolan, though many in the league are skeptical due to the closeness between Thibodeau and Rose.

Is there not a rule preventing other teams from contact currently employed coaches ?

It will be difficult to choose the right guy to this job. There is not a obvious name available

Mike Malone?
Mike Brown?
Taylor Jenkins?

Adrian Griffin was 30-13 when he got fired and the Bucks have sucked ever since.

None of these are better than Thibs. Every time it looks like the Knicks may have a promising future, they blow up the team. :banghead:

Well, I'd take Mike Brown off that list... but it's a pretty good list.

Udoka would be safe. Isn’t Jay Wright retired?

He’d play his bench, just the wrong reserves. #game7stillpissesmeoff

To clarify... by, "I'd take Mike Brown off that list," I meant: I would remove Mike Brown from that list. There are a few OK coaches that seem to get talked about like they are great coaches... Mike Brown, Scott Brooks, Nate McMillan, Billy Donovan, etc. These are coaches with a ton of basketball knowledge but very little creativity. Perfect for getting a team to play as a unit, but not the coaches you want making mid-game adjustments in the playoffs.

Yes, I agreed and added a reference to the boneheaded benching of Davion Mitchell for Terence Davis II in game 7 against the Dubs as Steph walked to 50.

Yeah, I got you... but I don't know that I can get behind you on the specifics of that game or that substitution. Davis was great in that series and Mitchell was not. In the end, they lost by 20. Swapping role players will rarely lead to a 20 point swing. Davion Mitchel wasn't the answer. In fact, Brown wasn't the issue either. The issue is that GSW had a couple of special performances and SAC was pedestrian.

Looney had 10 offensive rebounds 21 total!
Steph finished with 50/8/6 on .526 FG%

Meanwhile, Fox had 16/3/6 on .263 FG% with 5 fouls and 5 turnovers.
Barnes had 4/0/0 on 1-4 shooting.
Monk went 4-14
Huerter went 2-9
SAC shot 37.5% as a team. You can't win like that and the coach can't be held accountable for missed shots. Pretty much everyone except Sabonis and Davis choked in that 2nd half.

I only clarified because when I re-read my comment it sounded like it could have gone either way. "I'd take Mike Brown off that list" could have been interpreted as me taking him over the others on the list. I felt it was worth clarifying.

Yeah, Fox’s broken hand probably had more to do with it… but Davis was barely even there.
