The New York Knicks formally requested permission to speak to Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd about taking that same job in New York. The Mavericks rejected that request.

Over the last several days, Kidd emerged as a leading target for the Knicks. However, it was clear from the jump that Dallas would reject New York's inquiries into hiring Kidd.

The Knicks were reportedly also rebuffed in efforts to speak to Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch and Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka. This means New York is likely to turn to a coach who is not currently under contract to fill the opening that was created when the team fired Tom Thibodeau.

If you really want one of these guys who already have jobs, call and offer the protected WSH 1st you have in exchange for releasing the coach. Or whatever the technical exchange was when the Clippers essentially traded for Glenn Rivers from Boston.

Otherwise, you're going to have to hire Taylor Jenkins or Mike Malone.

i can't imagine draft capital being presented upfront being a barrier. we also don't know if that (or more) was proposed already.

i'd think if a team wants to keep their guy, they're not taking the call. if they didn't want their coach, they'd negotiate the compensation.

lastly, kidd is probably happy where he is. we've got news of assistant recruiting. good for them.

Kidd is in the perfect spot where he is. Failure will be viewed as Nico's fault. Any success will be viewed as overcoming Nico.
