The Los Angeles Lakers are believed to have involved Luka Doncic in their offseason plans as they look to upgrade their roster around him. The Lakers are weighing their efforts to improve the team in the short-term ahead of his extension decision in August while also hoping to build around Doncic in the long-term.
"My sense with Luka is he's involved in everything they're doing," said Ramona Shelburne on ESPN LA on Tuesday. "If he had a big problem it—I don't know he would make his feelings known the way LeBron does, but I think he would make his feelings known. Whether it would be public or private, he would make his feelings known.
"So my sense is they're proceeding along this route. They have confidence in this plan."
By all accounts to date, Doncic has been fully committed to the Lakers. The Lakers are open to any extension type that Doncic chooses. Beginning August 2nd, Doncic can sign a four-year, $229 million extension with the Lakers. Alternatively, he could opt for a shorter three-year, $165 million deal with a player option for 28-29, positioning himself for a potential five-year, $418 million contract in 2028 when he reaches 10 years of service.
Doncic might also play out his current contract through 25-26 before choosing between a five-year, $296 million deal with the Lakers, or a four-year, $219 million contract elsewhere.
