Jonas Valanciunas, Nuggets Have Ongoing Talks Amid His Offer From Panathinaikos

Jonas Valanciunas and the Denver Nuggets are having ongoing conversations amid a lucrative offer he has received from Panathinaikos in Greece. Valanciunas was traded by the Sacramento Kings to the Nuggets this week for Dario Saric. That trade will still move forward regardless of whether Valanciunas decides to remain in the NBA or return to Europe.
Valanciunas signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Washington Wizards last offseason and was subsequently traded to the Kings at the deadline. Valanciunas would give the Nuggets valuable rotation minutes at center behind Nikola Jokic.

If he leaves, does that cancel the trade?

The salary is given and the team pays the tax.

You didn't read the article, did you? It was over a hundred words.
"That trade will still move forward regardless of whether Valanciunas decides to remain in the NBA or return to Europe. The Kings need the trade of Valanciunas for Saric to be executed in order to move forward due to the salary cap implications involving their other offseason business."

Clunky language kills.
Better written: "The Kings need the Valanciunas for Saric trade to be executed"

At the bottom of all RealGM articles is a link to the source. In this case it was a Tweet by Jake Fischer which read:
Another update on Jonas Valanciunas: Discussions are fluid between the veteran center and Denver, sources say, while he's received a lucrative offer from Panathinaikos in Greece.
I'm told, though, that any outcome here won't impact the trade between Sacramento and Denver.RealGM articles are often poorly written or misrepresentative click-bait. When in doubt, check the source!

Jonas Valanciunas will make more money if he stays in the NBA, but you're right, he could be EuroLeague MVP if he goes. We all chase our own dreams.

Because a 3 year deal for $30 million is far from lucrative

Ye, if he has a contract with the NBA he needs to either forfeit it or convince a team to buy him out afaik and neither of this is realistic. Vezenkov got bought out to go to the Euro League for less than he was owed and he had only 1 year left, so it was easy to mutually agree to do that when he was gonna make more in the long run, cuz he was also young when that happened. Here we are talking about Valanciunas, who is 33yr old declining Center, so I doubt Panathinaikos gonna give him the 20mil he is owed over next 2 years or offer him a 5 year 40mil deal, which by the way I would assume will be less than what he can make if he stays in the NBA, cuz there aren't that many good centers to really drive him out of the League there are teams needing a 15-25min Center off the bench or even a starting one every single trade window.

Trade still goes through but if Valanciunas really must go to Europe, they can agree to $0 buyout meaning Nuggets would be off the hook for his salary. Not sure what value that would have for Nuggets. Some tax teams might value that more than player himself. And that $0 buyout has been done before last year with the Raptors also with a guy that came from Kings off a trade. But that was for one year contract and much smaller.

I heard today that his offer in Greece was 3yr/$36m... which is hard to believe because the highest paid player in EuroLeague is currently getting 4.1m Euro. (Under $5m) If the reporting is true though, he's gone!

EuroLeague MVP's are usually players that can't start in the NBA. Kendrick Nunn was last years MVP.
