No Trade Buzz Surrounding LeBron James Since Opt-In With Lakers

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 8, 2025 7:05 pm

LeBron James remains with the Los Angeles Lakers despite casting doubt on his future after opting into his $52.6 million contract for the 2025-26 season, with no active trade discussions currently taking place.

The four-time champion's agent Rich Paul previously suggested the Lakers were building long-term around younger players rather than maximizing title chances. Multiple teams expressed initial interest following those comments, but no concrete negotiations have materialized.

Speculation has linked James to the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, and Cleveland Cavaliers as potential destinations. His no-trade clause requires approval for any deal, while his massive contract creates significant salary-matching challenges for interested teams.

Zach Lowe of The Ringer indicated on Monday that there appears to be nothing going on with James, the Lakers and a possible trade.

"I know he opted into $52.6 million and he's playing for the Lakers and I have heard zero, nothing about any kind of trade—anything—in the last week since he did that," Lowe said on his podcast.

The Knicks appeared to be the most viable trade partner before recent roster moves complicated their financial flexibility. New York signed Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, pushing them close to the second apron threshold.

"Now that the Knicks having signed [Jordan] Clarkson and [Guerschon] Yabusele and gotten right up to the itsy bitsy second apron are certainly not operating like a team that think something like that is possible," Lowe explained.

Lowe noted this situation feels distinct from previous instances where James pressured the Lakers to make roster improvements.

"I don't know what's going to happen, but this still feels different to me, materially, than the previous 'Okay, guys, you better trade some stuff to appease me,'" Lowe concluded.

The Lakers appear positioned to begin the season with James on the roster despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term commitment to the franchise as they have shifted their priorities to building around Luka Doncic while maintaining cap flexibility for 2026 and 2027.

The Lakers have yet to comment publicly or even off the record about James' status with the team, which has added to the intrigue around the NBA on the state of their partnership. James first signed with the Lakers in 2018 upon leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers. During the 2019 offseason, the Lakers acquired Anthony Davis and went on to win the 2020 NBA championship. In the years since, James and the Lakers have mainly had a strong partnership with fewer fissures than he had in previous stops with the Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

The closest James has come to leaving the Lakers came at the trade deadline in 2024 when the Warriors inquired about his availability. Paul asked the Lakers not to trade James to the Warriors. As recently as December of 2024 before they traded for Jimmy Butler, James continued to be a player the Warriors were interested in.

He's retiring a Laker, unless he signs with the Cavs for the minimum next summer. He's a Laker this year whether he likes it or not.
