Lakers Appear To Be Planning On 2025-26 Being Final Season With LeBron James

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jul 11, 2025 3:08 am

LeBron James has been in Northeast Ohio this offseason, which has fueled speculation that he could be angling an exit from the Los Angeles Lakers to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers functionally couldn't acquire James unless they trade Donovan Mitchell for him straight up, or if he takes a buyout from the Lakers that they are highly disincentivized from agreeing upon.

If James takes a buyout after the start of the season, the Cavaliers would be unable to sign him because his salary is above the midlevel.

However, James appears to be entering what will be his final season with the Lakers as they pivot around Luka Doncic.

"As we sit here in July, it looks like the Lakers are planning on this being the last year for LeBron," said Brian Windhorst on ESPN Cleveland. "If you get a year from now and LeBron still wants to play into age 42, yeah, I think it's a conversation. But as soon as LeBron opted into that contract, and as soon as the Cavs entered the second apron, it pretty much closed the door on this happening. Regardless of what he might say on X."

James left the Cavaliers to sign with the Lakers in 2018 after reaching the Finals in all four of his seasons with the franchise upon his return from the Miami Heat.

Oh how sweet it is that the Lakers are just doing them without considering LeBron

It was to explain why he opted in. He's never opted in for his career. He has always usually extended.

The comments after were to explain why he did that. He doesn't think Lakers are building for contention.

Good on the Lakers just considering LeBron to be a dude who plays for their team.

And LeBron opted in because he knew he wasn't getting that money anywhere else.

BKN gets Strus and Allen
LAL gets Claxton and Garland
CLE gets LeBron, 30 swap rights LAL, LAL 31 1st UNP, 32 swap rights LAL

They haven’t been building for contention since they won the championship in 2020. They are still scarred by Kobe’s last few seasons and how the franchise was after he retired. They banked on LeBron having a similar decline and missed out on at least one more championship by not adding a legitimate center to their roster after they didn’t resign McGee or Howard.

Laker fans are too blind to see what’s happening right in front of them. Once LeBron’s salary comes off the books that money is not going to be open cap space to sign a top free agent (when was the last time a top free agent left in free agency anyway since the new CBA started?). That money is going to Austin Reaves who just declined a max contract extension in hopes of getting even more money, and to resign players like Rui and Ayton unless they plan on letting the walk in free agency. They are never going to bottom out because they have Luka, they don’t own a lot of their draft picks in the coming seasons and what team is going to accept Austin Reaves as the center piece in trade for a star player? Which begs another question, why would Luka sign up for this long term?

You said a whole lot of nothing...

1. Who was the last free Agent to leave-Paul George took money in Philly last year.
2. It's the Lakers, anything is possible. A year a go you would of thought anyone was crazy thinking they could get Luka. They'll put another star next to him, they've done it for decades.
