Devin Carter Available As Kings Look To Move A Guard

The Sacramento Kings and Russell Westbrook have been circling each other for a while this offseason. Before the Kings commit to a deal with Westbrook, they want to clear out some space in their guard rotation. Second-year guard Devin Carter is believed to be the most available player of that group.
Carter appeared in 36 games as a rookie after undergoing left shoulder surgery in July of last year. The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 11 minutes per game. Sacramento had drafted Carter with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He's set to make $4.9 million this season.
The Kings have an open standard roster spot and are roughly $5.4 million under the luxury tax line. However, Sacramento will be without starting power forward Keegan Murray for the first month of the season. That could force the Kings to look to fill that open spot with a big man, leaving a trade to create room to sign Westbrook.

Why post this as if it’s news? I’m pretty sure we knew it already.
The most successful player I could compare to Carter is Gary Payton II. The Warriors were able to turn him into a solid bench player when they realized that he’s not a guard, he’s a 6’2” forward, who compensates for his short stature with long arms and hard work. Carter is similar to GP2 in height and wingspan, and his calling card is defense. Seems like Carter’s coach should take a similar approach with him.

Honestly, I watched him in like 1 game last year and he wasn't super impressive. He played hard, but he's not a pg.
But , if you draft a guy that high, you shouldn't even consider cutting bait after 1 injury shortened season. He's a sparkplug defender who needed to clean up his shot to be an NBA rotation player. If you aren't willing to develop a guy like that, just don't draft him. That's really poor asset management.
