The Atlanta Hawks have expressed interest in acquiring Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford as Kristaps Porzingis continues to deal with illness that has sidelined him for extended stretches.

Porzingis has missed 14 of the previous 15 games for Atlanta. The Hawks view Gafford as a potential solution to their frontcourt depth issues, though significant obstacles remain in negotiations. Gafford signed a three-year, $60 million contract extension last offseason and is signed through 2029. Gafford's contract has a similar annual average value as Wendell Garter Jr. and Jarrett Allen.

Hawks sources strongly disputed reports that they would include 2024 No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher in any Gafford trade package. Team officials remain optimistic about Risacher's development despite his struggles in his second season.

The Mavericks are actively seeking young prospects and expiring contracts in discussions involving Gafford. Dallas appears willing to move the center as they reshape their roster.

Like Porzingis, Gafford has a history of health problems that would make acquiring him a risky proposition for Atlanta.

The potential trade presents complications for the Hawks' front office. Adding Gafford would address an immediate need but comes with long-term financial and health concerns.

Atlanta officials have indicated a desire to see more of their current roster together before making major moves. However, Porzingis' ongoing absence and the team's recent struggles may force the Hawks to act sooner than planned.

The Hawks have lost 10 of their past 12 games and seven straight overall. Whether they pursue Gafford or another center option before the trade deadline remains unclear. The Hawks also have Onyeka Okongwu and Asa Newell on their depth chart at center.

Gafford will have many suitors. Any team that wants him will need to bring the sauce!

Including a pick for a 7-0 centre who absolutely has zero positive characteristics other than being big and holding a certain coordination and ability to rebound and dunk when the ball is given to him with all the advantages would be crazy.
