The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract with veteran pitcher Max Scherzer. Scherzer, 40, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Texas Rangers, where he made just nine starts and posted a 2-4 record with a 3.95 ERA.
Scherzer will join the Blue Jays’ rotation, bolstering an already strong staff that includes veterans Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt, and Bowden Francis.
Toronto had been aggressive in its offseason pursuit of high-profile players, targeting outfielder Juan Soto and pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. However, each of those players ultimately signed with other teams, as did Japanese star Roki Sasaki.
