Ketel Marte has agreed to a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension with the Arizona Diamondbacks that runs through 2030, his agent Charisse Dash told ESPN on Wednesday. The deal includes a player option for 2031 valued at $11.5 million and replaces his previous five-year, $76 million contract signed in 2022. Incentives could push the total value to $149.5 million.
Marte, 31, finished third in MVP voting last season after compiling a .932 OPS in 136 games while setting career highs with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs. The two-time All-Star has established himself as a cornerstone for the Arizona franchise, where he has spent the past eight seasons after beginning his career in Seattle.
The versatile second baseman has a career .280 batting average with a .348 on-base percentage, 143 home runs and 515 RBIs across 11 major league seasons. After originally playing multiple positions including outfield, Marte has settled in at second base over the past few seasons, producing a 6.8 bWAR last year which followed his 6.9 bWAR in 2019 when he finished fourth in MVP voting.
This extension continues Arizona\'s recent trend of securing core players, following deals for pitcher Brandon Pfaadt (five years, $45 million), shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (four years, $45 million), and reliever Justin Martinez (five years, $18 million). The Diamondbacks have demonstrated their commitment to building a competitive roster after also signing free agent pitcher Corbin Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract during the offseason.
