The relationship between Devers and the Red Sox had deteriorated this year, but there was no widespread indication that he was available. The trade was broken by Robert Murray of Fansided, who says that MLB insiders are comparing the shock of the trade to the February deal in the NBA when Luka Doncic was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers.
\"The fact they ended up making this trade and even doing it so far in advance of the trade deadline is so unprecedented It\'s got everyone in baseball honestly calling this the Luka Doncic trade of baseball,\" said Murray on FrontOfficeSports Today. \"Obviously, you know the magnitude of that one. It\'s a huge trade. No one in baseball saw this coming.
\"I legitimately thought I got duped when I got tipped off on this. It took me five different people to feel good enough to Tweet it. And I was a hundred percent sure, but even after all the confirmations weren\'t coming after 10 minutes, I started to panic, but obviously it was right. And honestly it changed baseball.\"
Devers was in just the second season of a 10-year, $313.5 million deal signed with the Red Sox in January 2023. San Francisco\'s trade package was headlined by Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison with their willingness to take on Devers\' contract viewed as a major component of the trade.
