Leyland: Fielder Doesn't Have Time To 'Work Out' Of Slump

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Oct 19, 2013 9:59 pm

Jim Leyland was asked prior to Game 6 of the ALCS whether he has simply left Prince Fielder alone as he continues to struggle at the plate in the postseason.

Fielder is hitting .243/.317/.270 without a home run or RBI in 10 playoff games.

"First of all, people say work your way out of it, it's almost like saying this is April or May," Leyland said. "We don't have much time right now. Time is not on anybody's side right now that is struggling. But Prince Fielder is not the only guy in the National League playoffs or the American League playoffs that's struggled.

"We've got a lot of guys struggling. The Dodger-Cardinal game, they weren't that impressive. There are a lot of batting averages that aren't real good right now."

Fielder has nine hits in the playoffs, eight of which have been singles.

"He's a high-profile guy, so that sticks out a little more," Leyland said of Fielder. "I think Mac continues to work with him. We saw a little bit in the -- maybe the foot getting down a little quicker. But I don't know if that's the answer, I truly don't know if that's the answer.

"Who knows? It can happen anytime, and that's what I continue to say about Prince. Anytime he's in the batter's box, I feel like something big can happen at any time. So far it hasn't happened."
