Hal Steinbrenner insists that the New York Yankees will have money to spend once the free-agent season goes into full swing.
"Even with [Alex Rodriguez] as our third baseman, we will have a fair amount of money to spend to try to fill the holes, and that's what we're going to do," Steinbrenner said.
The well-documented $189 million payroll for 2014 remains a goal, not a mandate, and will not stand in the way of rebuilding a team that won that missed the playoffs for just the second time in the past 19 years.
"We know what the fans expect of us," Steinbrenner said. "We're going to field the best team we can every year."
