Blue Jays Could Benefit From Compensation Rules

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jan 30, 2014 9:45 pm

The Toronto Blue Jays could stand to benefit from baseball's draft pick compensation rules.

Five of the top free agents still on the market are linked to pick compensation.

Any team looking to sign Ubaldo Jimenez, Ervin Santana, Stephen Drew, Nelson Cruz or Kendrys Morales must give up a top draft choice.

The Blue Jays have a pair of 2014 first round picks that are protected, so instead of forfeiting a top pick, they would only give up their second rounder, the 49th overall selection.

"It's significant," Alex Anthopoulos said. "I think if we had to give up a first round pick, it would change things in a significant manner. I think that's where the draft pick compensation component is impacting some of these clubs."
