Sternberg Calls Moving Rays 'Unrealistic'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jun 25, 2013 12:14 pm

The Rays have the lowest average attendance in the American League even though they are on pace to finish with a winning record for the sixth straight season.

Principal owner Stuart Sternberg says the team's lease at Tropicana Field runs through 2027.

"Fourteen (more) years, through 2027. It's far, but it's not that far because I can't in 2026 snap my fingers and all of a sudden have a place to play. The groundwork needs to be done, starting very soon," Sternberg said of a new home for the Rays.

Sternberg doesn't think a move is realistic down the line.

"It's very unrealistic. If it's up to me, it's very unrealistic," Sternberg said. "There's certainly been a lot of discussion, from others within baseball, that we should get the hell out of there. It's not in my makeup to do that. I am committed to doing whatever I can, until I can no longer do it, to make it work there."
