The New York Yankees will remain below the $189 million luxury tax threshold if Alex Rodriguez remains suspended for the 2014 season, according to a source.

Rodriguez has a $27.5 million base salary and would receive a $6 million bonus for passing Willie Mays on the all-time home run list.

“If Alex isn’t suspended, there’s almost no way they can sign everyone they want and stay under $189 million,” said the source.

The Yankees could stay below the number while re-signing Robinson Cano.
