Cano Says He 'Didn't Get Any Respect From Yankees'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Dec 13, 2013 2:48 pm

Robinson Cano felt the New York Yankees lacked in their effort to re-sign him this offseason.

"I didn't feel respect. I didn't get respect from them and I didn't see any effort," Cano said.

Cano said he didn't think he'd leave New York, but the Yankees didn't appear to want him back.

New York's top offer was $175 million over seven years. The Seattle Mariners gave Cano a 10-year, $240 million deal.

He's not foolish for taking SEA $$, just foolish for saying the Yankees didn't respect him.

I'm missing something here. 7 years 175 million from the Yankees is an average of 25 million a year. By the time that contract is up he would be 38 years old, and probably not be as productive and retire. Now Seattle gave him 10 years 240 million with it spread even at 24 million per year, and no options to leave the team which means he has to play until he is 41 to collect the full amount. If he retires, or lord knows what else and leaves the team he won't collect anything else. It seems he would have been better off taking the million more per year offered by the Yankees in this case. Can't see him playing 2B in his late 30s into early 40s and still having good range. At that point he would primarily become a DH if his power numbers are the same. So for the first 7 years of this contract Robinson gave up 7 million dollars by signing with the Mariners. So he better play the last 3 years to make this contract worth it. By then, no one will care.
