The Washington Nationals tried to extend Doug Fister's contract after acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers this offseason.
Talks never progressed, however, according to the report.
The Nationals employed a similar tactic when they acquired Gio Gonzalez from the Oakland Athletics before the 2012 season. They signed Gonzalez to a five-year, $42.5 million deal with two club options.
