Yankees Lack Pieces To Execute Immediate Rebuild

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 30, 2014 1:23 pm

The New York Yankees have missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons, but executing a quick rebuild is almost impossible.

Teams generally rebuild by trading older, expensive players and capitalizing on high draft picks. The Yankees don't have high picks coming and the older players they have are extremely expensive.

"Who exactly could the Yankees trade? Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira have bloated contracts, deep injury histories and declining performance (not to mention blanket no-trade clauses and no desire to leave). The Yanks are stuck with them," writes Joel Sherman.

Spending money, perhaps on Max Scherzer and/or Victor Martinez, is another option, but not a smart one with neither considered young at this point.

Did rip van winkle suddenly wake up from a deep slumber? The Yankees buy themselves a contender EVERY SEASON, and acquiring 30 year olds is always part of their plan because they are in win-now mentality and choose NOT to develop young talent.

Of Course the Yanks are stuck with the bloated contracts of Tex and A-Rod, but that's largely irrelevant when it's JUST money to them. This is the Yankees and the sensibility of spending money on big names like Scherzer or VIctor Martinez is irrelevant in New York. EVERYONE knows this...

They will spend what it takes to put a team together that will compete for 90 wins next year.

Scherzer is 30 years old and would absolutely be signed for a 7-8 year contract worth 150+ mil
Jon Lester and James Shields are also options in a similar position. Putting one or two of those guys next to CC and Tanaka by all rights, makes them instant contenders.

Finding a replacement for Jeter in the clubhouse will be impossible, but finding a replacement for him at the plate on the field will be easy if they go after Asdrubal Cabrera, Hanley Ramirez or JJ Hardy

Does anybody (other than Joel Sherman) really think the Yanks are going to rebuild with younger players and try to develop talent? Get real.
