Rays Won't Name Closer With McGee Back

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon May 18, 2015 8:52 pm

Jake McGee has recovered from left elbow surgery, giving the Tampa Bay Rays multiple options at closer.

Brad Boxberger is a perfect 10-for-10 in save chances this season. McGee pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning on Sunday afternoon in his return. He converted 19 of his 24 save opportunities with a 1.89 ERA in 2014.

Tampa Bay's bullpen that has pitched the second-most innings in the Major Leagues and has posted a combined 3.25 ERA. Kevin Cash won't name a permanent closer going forward.

"I wouldn't label anything, other than to say we'll manage the situation kind of how the game dictates the guys and how fresh they are and the matchups," Cash said. "I understand it's a sensitive situation, but for the time being going forward, we think it's best for the club to have the flexibility with those guys."
