Rogers Centre Peppered With Beer Cans After Controversial Call

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Oct 15, 2015 11:15 am

Things got ugly at Rogers Centre on Wednesday night after a controversial, but correct, call in the deciding Game 5 between the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Rangers took a 3-2 lead when Russell Martin's throw back to the mound accidentally hit Shin-Soo Choo. With the throw deflected, Rougned Odor scored from third base.

Immediately after the throw hit Choo, home plate umpire Dale Scott threw his hands in the air. After Jeff Banister argued, Scott conferred with his entire umpiring crew and they ruled that the ball was live and Odor's run counts.

In the aftermath, many fans at Rogers Centre began to throw beer cans and other trash onto the field.

I don't understand how it's the correct call when the Blue Jays see the home plate umpire waving the play dead. Yes, they should have run to the ball and thrown home immediately, but my understanding is that if the lead official stops a play, all subsequent activity is null and void (excluding behaviour resulting in disciplinary league action, for example)

Everything is practice.
