Gio Gonzalez reached 180 innings on the season during Tuesday night's start against the Atlanta Braves, vesting his $12 million option with the Washington Nationals for 2018.
The Nationals acquired Gonzalez, 31, as part of a six-player trade in December 2011. That January he signed a five-year, $42 million contract extension that included club options for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
It was a near-certainty that the Nationals would have elected to pick up Gonzalez's option regardless.
