Shohei Ohtani has appeared in nine of the Los Angeles Angels' first 14 games, but wants to do more.

The dual-threat has made two starts as a pitcher and six as designated hitter.

"I talk to the medical staff every day, and they see how I'm doing, my strength level, to see if I can play that day," Ohtani said through his translator.

"It's the beginning of the season, so I think they are being pretty careful with me right now. Once the season gets tougher and the schedule gets tougher throughout the summer, hopefully I can make them want to play me more. I would like to play more. If not, that's what it is. I have to follow what they have to say."

As a pitcher, Ohtani is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 13 innings. In his first seven games with an at-bat, including one as a pinch-hitter, the left-handed slugger hit .346 with three homers and 11 RBI.

These numbers are ridiculous. The 162-game season could be his toughest test, so I get the caution around playing him every day. Very exciting time for all of baseball, though!

It's not even 20 games into the season. I think beyond preventing injury and fatigue it's an advantage to play him part-time. Teams will have less film to scout and pitchers will have a harder time picking up on his habits. He would get exposed to a certain degree if he were to be an everyday player.
