The New York Yankees reworked Aroldis Chapman\'s contract, but they still might have to pay the competitive balance tax if they sign Gerrit Cole this offseason.

It\'s believed that Chapman\'s $48 million contract over the next three seasons will cost the Yankees roughly $17.5 million annually toward the CBT payroll. Joel Sherman estimates that the Yankees will be right up against the $208 million mark for the first tax penalty before taking any big-name additions into account.
