Mets, Edwin Diaz Agree To Five-Year, $102M Landmark Deal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Nov 7, 2022 12:42 am

Closer Edwin Diaz and the New York Mets are in agreement on a five-year, $102 million contract, pending a physical, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN\'s Jeff Passan on Sunday.

There\'s an opt-out and a full no-trade clause plus a sixth-year option in the contract, sources said.

The Diaz deal is the first nine-figure contract ever for a closer, and for the first time, it takes the position into the $20 million-plus range.

No one was going to give Diaz anywhere near this type of contract.

Yes Cohen has the money to throw around, but there’s no point in outbidding yourself.

I thought the same thing. Who were they bidding against? Also every team who has given a large multi-year contract to a relief pitcher has regretted it. Kenley Jansen, Craig Kimbrel, Ian Kennedy, Aroldis Chapman, Wade Davis. $20M a year to pitch 60 innings is absurd.

This guy is deeply imbedded in "the system". Money is quite literally not an object for this guy as his posse are the people who print it. Yes this is a massive overpay but it's likely to be irrelevant in the bigger picture, as this wont stop them from spending as much money as they want to going forward.

They will regret this deal after year 2 or 3.
