The New York Mets nearly traded Pete Alonso to the Milwaukee Brewers prior to the Aug. 1 deadline, according to a report.
Following the report, Alonso expressed his feelings about the organization.
\"Being a Met, it\'s the only thing I know,\" Alonso said.
\"There are so many people here -- not just here in the big league clubhouse, but I came up with in the Minor Leagues -- that have had such a positive impact on my career. It\'s been phenomenal here so far. I don\'t know what the future holds, but right now, I\'m a Met.
\"And I love being a Met. I take pride in putting on the jersey every day and representing the city of New York.\"
According to a Brewers official quoted anonymously in The Athletic report, the teams were within \"field-goal range\" of completing a deal that would have sent Alonso to Milwaukee for a package including at least one of the Brewers\' top-five prospects.

Trading Alonso would have been an epic fail. You don't build a good team by getting ridding of your best young players. This makes me not want to ever watch this team again.

That's just coming from someone in the Brewers organization who's trying to drive a wedge between the Mets and Alonso. I'm not really concerned about it. If true, I'd like to know what the Brewers had offered just to see what other teams think of him. I also think sports teams just do this occasionally to see what their star players are worth.

"At least 1 top 5 player" likely means the Brewers offered maybe the 3rd best prospect and the Mets said, "we won't list unless you offer 2 or 3 top 5 players".
From Milwaukee's point of view, maybe it was close. From the Mets'...probably never a chance it was going to happen.
