The New York Yankees have World Series aspirations and are hoping to sign Juan Soto to a long-term deal, but owner Hal Steinbrenner warns that the club might be cutting some corners.

\"I\'m gonna be honest, payrolls at the levels we\'re at right now are simply not sustainable for us financially,\" Steinbrenner said at the owners\' meeting. \"It wouldn\'t be sustainable for the vast majority of ownership [groups], given the luxury tax we have to pay.\"

The Yankees have a payroll in excess of $300 million this season, which puts them deep in luxury-tax territory.

However, they have nearly $100 million coming off the books this offseason.

How do they lower payroll while re-signing/extending Soto to a half billion dollar contract?

Soto is already making +30m this year. IF he signs a contract with a 45m aav then it is just a 15 million increase to the club's annual payroll. They have Torres (14m) and Rizzo (20m) off the book after this year.

Not a problem, just sign Soto to a 15 year 1 billion dollar deal, but don't start paying him 98% of it until 2040.
