The Chicago White Sox have claimed another record for futility during a historically bad season.

The White Sox were eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, the earliest mathematical elimination from postseason contention since 1969.

The 2018 Baltimore Orioles held the previous mark.

Chicago is on pace to lose 123 games.

The modern record for the most losses in a single season is 120, established by the expansion New York Mets in 1962.

Uh, how is it the earliest mathematical elimination since 1969, yet the Orioles had the record in 2018??? The math doesn't add up on that.

Anytime they say "since 1969", what they mean is in the divisional play era. Basically the "modern" era.

It's awkward phrasing. But you have to read it as "since divisional play has started, the Sox have set the record for the earliest elimination".

Yeah it was awfully worded. I get what they are saying now.
