The Washington Nationals interviewed Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero for their top front-office position, making him the second Red Sox executive to meet with the organization.

Romero interviewed last week for the role that opened after Washington fired Mike Rizzo as president of baseball operations on July 6, according to sources briefed on the team\'s process. Red Sox assistant GM Paul Toboni also interviewed but reportedly remains a top candidate for Boston\'s GM job under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.

Romero joined the Red Sox in February 2006 as an assistant in international and professional scouting. He advanced through multiple roles before becoming executive vice president and assistant GM in November 2018.

Interim president Mike DeBartolo, who replaced Rizzo, also remains under consideration for the permanent role. The Nationals plan to hire both a president of baseball operations and general manager before the regular season ends.

Other executives in the running include Arizona Diamondbacks assistant GM Amiel Sawdaye, Los Angeles Dodgers senior vice president Josh Byrnes and Cleveland Guardians assistant GM Matt Forman. The organization wants to complete the front office hires quickly to begin searching for a new manager.

Chicago Cubs GM Carter Hawkins has withdrawn from consideration and plans to remain with his current team, a source confirmed to The Athletic. Hawkins was celebrating the Cubs\' first postseason appearance since 2020 when his removal from the process was reported Wednesday.

Washington aims to fill both executive positions by season\'s end to focus on managerial search. The dual hiring approach reflects the organization\'s desire to rebuild its baseball operations structure following Rizzo\'s departure after 16 seasons.
