The MLB expanded its playoff format beginning with the 1995 season following the strike that canceled the 1994 season. With a third division in each league and a Wildcard berth, the MLB doubled its playoff teams from four to eight.
From 2012 until 2019/2021, the MLB adopted a 10-team playoff with a one-game wildcard playoff. And since 2022, there is now a 12-team playoff with three division winners and three wildcard teams.
The New York Yankees lead the MLB in playoff appearances during the timespan with 26 ahead of the Atlanta Braves with 21 and Los Angeles Dodgers with 19. World Series wins are listed below in bold.
