Brandon Aubrey Believes 70-Yard Field Goals Will Become New Normal

Brandon Aubrey holds the NFL record for most career field goals beyond 60 yards with five, achieved during his third season with the Dallas Cowboys. The 29-year-old kicker made a 61-yard field goal at AT&T Stadium in mid-October to secure the mark. He has kicked two field goals beyond 60 yards this season alone.

Aubrey was a software engineer just six years ago before beginning his kicking career. He never played football in college and spent only a brief stint with the USFL\'s Birmingham Stallions before joining Dallas in 2023. Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel scouted Aubrey at a USFL game in June 2023.

Aubrey trained with swing coach Brian Egan for two years at a recreational field in Frisco, Texas. The Cowboys\' practice facility was visible on the horizon during those sessions. Aubrey would leave his software engineering job at 3 p.m. to train three days per week.

\"I really think not kicking in high school or even college was probably a plus because you can tell that he hasn\'t been overcoached,\" Fassel said. \"Everything was very natural.\"

Aubrey made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2023 and again in 2024. Dak Prescott nicknamed him \"Butter\" and welcomed him as one of the Cowboys\' captains. Prescott orders the song \"White Horse\" by Chris Stapleton to be played during Aubrey\'s field goal attempts.

The NFL has seen 46 field goals of 60 yards or longer in its 105-year history. More than half have come since 2020. Jacksonville\'s Cam Little set an NFL record with a 68-yard field goal on November 2, breaking the previous mark of 66 yards set by Justin Tucker.

Aubrey kicked a 65-yard field goal last September and made a 64-yard kick as time expired against the Giants this September. He became the first kicker in NFL history to record consecutive seasons with 10 or more field goals beyond 50 yards.

\"There\'s no reason guys won\'t be able to hit 60-yard field goals consistently for a long time to come,\" Aubrey said. \"I think 70 will be the new 60.\"
