Patriots Won't Pay Bonus To Aaron Hernandez For Work Completed

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jul 25, 2013 3:46 pm

The New England Patriots will not pay Aaron Hernandez an $82,000 workout bonus due on August 1 for work he performed prior to being charged with murder.

Withholding this offseason workout bonus is expected to be a harbinger of the $3.25 million bonus due to Hernandez in March 2014, which league sources said the Patriots also will not pay.

The payment is expected to be contested by Hernandez's agents.

not another job in this country would attempt to withhold pay for work you completed prior to an arrest. doesnt matter how messed up his actions were, you still have to pay him money owed. he held up his end of the bargain prior to his arrest, you have to hold up yours. his pay stops when he was arrested and you cut him, not before.

Capt Lopez are you forgetting about the huge guaranteed signing bonus Hernandez collected when signing his multi year contract. They won't get those millions back, and that is essentially a good faith payment for his services ahead of being received for the multiple years. Oh well.

A signing bonus is essentially guaranteed money. We would have to know the exact language of his contract to know if it had any morality clauses in it. Even if it did, you would still have to pay him and attempt to recover the money later. This is essentially the same as if they'd cut him if there'd been no arrest. Remember, he has not been convicted of anything and this could drag out for years. He is innocent until proven guilty. As for a workout bonus, if he attended paid workouts while member of the team, he is entitled to his bonus. What he is accused of doing is horrendous but you have to keep emotion out of this and think about it from a legal perspective. Imagine you are a teacher and you attend a teacher workshop. If you are arrested after, the school still must pay you. This is just an example of the NFL owners being greedy and attempting to recoup as much money as they can. Its a bad precedent to set and would not be good for the NFLPA.
