The San Francisco 49ers have released Vic Fangio from his contract as defensive coordinator.
Fangio wanted to become head coach of the 49ers and was only prepared to stay with the franchise if they hired Mike Shanahan.
Fangio figures to be a candidate for Washington's defensive coordinator position.
