Texans \'Working Hard\' To Sign Deshaun Watson To Extension

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jul 31, 2020 6:55 pm

Bill O\'Brien revealed on Friday that the Houston Texans are \"working hard\" to sign Deshaun Watson to a long-term extension.

Watson made less than $3.8 million in 2019, which was just 4.88% of the Texans\' cap. He is scheduled to make $4.4 million during the 2020 season.

\"Deshaun is a great player, an even better person, and we want him here for a long time,\" O\'Brien said. \"... I know that we\'re working hard. We\'re not going to really talk about it in the media, but obviously we feel so strongly about him and the future of him in this offense, in this organization, and we want him here for a long time.\"

Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year, $503 million extension earlier this month as a fellow member of the 2017 draft class.

If I am Watson, I'm not interested in resigning when I can get paid well to play for a competent franchise elsewhere.

It sounds nice.

How long are you willing to ride it out? They already have him locked down for the next 2 years. 4.4 mil this year and 17.5 next year. If he doesn't sign an extension, they will just franchise him the following 2 years after that. He is a top tier QB. There will be no hesitation to give him the tag.

So, are you willing to ride out the next 4 years (at a minimum) to get to free agency with only 21 guaranteed right now? Or, do you lock down an extension that will undoubtedly guarantee you 120+ million right now?

Obrien has given out a number of very, very player friendly contracts over the past couple of years. I'm betting a Watson deal gets done.
