Brock Purdy has reported for the San Francisco 49ers\' voluntary offseason training program that began Tuesday, despite ongoing negotiations for a long-term contract extension, a source told ESPN\'s Adam Schefter.
Linebacker Fred Warner, who remains under contract for two more seasons but could also receive an extension, has likewise attended the voluntary activities at the team facility. The presence of both players signals positive relations even as contract discussions continue behind the scenes.
Notable in his absence was George Kittle, who is entering the final year of his contract signed in 2020. Sources familiar with the situation note Kittle\'s absence isn\'t unusual for veteran players during voluntary portions of the offseason program, especially those in contract negotiations.
Purdy and the 49ers have been working toward a long-term agreement throughout the offseason, marking the first opportunity for an extension since Purdy became eligible in his fourth NFL season. Earlier this year, Purdy had expressed a desire to have a deal finalized before the beginning of the offseason program.
The 24-year-old quarterback is playing on the final year of his rookie contract, set to earn $5 million this season. Purdy is believed to be seeking a significant raise that could reach upwards of $50 million annually, placing him among the league\'s highest-paid quarterbacks after leading San Francisco to consecutive NFC Championship appearances in 2022 and 2023.
General Manager John Lynch previously expressed optimism about completing Purdy\'s deal.
\"I don\'t think it\'s too optimistic [to get it done by then],\" said Lynch. \"I think I understand why Brock wants that. We\'d like that very much, so we\'ve just got to find that right place for both sides.\"
Purdy\'s decision to participate in voluntary activities suggests negotiations haven\'t reached a contentious stage, even as the two sides continue working toward an agreement that would solidify him as the franchise quarterback for years to come. The 49ers will begin OTAs on May 27, with mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 10-11.
