Cowboys Working On \'Substantive Trades\' Ahead Of NFL Draft

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Apr 22, 2025 7:36 pm

The Dallas Cowboys are exploring potential player trades in addition to their 10 current selections across seven rounds in the upcoming NFL Draft, according to team owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Speaking after Tuesday\'s predraft news conference, Jones revealed the Cowboys are engaged in discussions about \"pretty substantive trades\" with other teams, though he declined to provide specific details about potential targets.

The Cowboys currently possess over $37 million in salary cap space according to NFLPA figures, though a portion will be allocated toward draft picks, practice squad additions, injury settlements, and incentives. This financial flexibility could facilitate potential trades.

Dallas has made 72 trades since Jones took ownership in 1989, with their most recent first-round trade occurring in 2021 when they moved down to No. 12 overall in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and selected star linebacker Micah Parsons.

Meanwhile, negotiations continue between the Cowboys and Parsons on a long-term extension that could make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. While Jones indicated they\'ve agreed on the contract\'s length, guaranteed money, and overall value during a lengthy meeting last month, executive vice president Stephen Jones acknowledged differences remain regarding the final figures.

\"Believe me, if we could sign Micah to a number we wanted to sign him to, we\'d do it right now,\" Stephen Jones said Tuesday. \"But right now there\'s a difference in what we feel like is the right number and what he feels like is the right number.\"

\"The assumption here is that we\'re going to get something done and so he knows or should know how important his work is around here and how important his being around here working is to leadership,\" Jones said regarding Parsons\' participation in the team\'s offseason program. \"Micah just has to be elevated in his leadership and will be, or it will be a downer when he gets his anticipated contract.\"
