Patrick Mahomes is getting a preview of what could be during a passing camp in Texas, working with his top three wide receivers who rarely shared the field together last season due to injuries. Mahomes is leading workouts with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown, providing an early glimpse of what Kansas City\'s passing attack might look like in 2025.
Rice began the 2024 season as one of the best wide receivers in the league, leading the NFL with 24 receptions through three games before a knee injury ended his campaign prematurely.
\"The expectations are high,\" Mahomes said regarding Rice. \"He looks really good. He is running routes, he\'s catching the football. I don\'t know when we get back into the actual OTAs [in May] how much he\'ll be able to do, but he\'s been able to do everything here as far as running routes and everything like that.\"
Brown, who joined the Chiefs as a free agent last year, suffered a sternoclavicular injury on the first play of the preseason. After surgery, he managed to appear in just two regular-season games plus the playoffs, finishing with only 14 catches for 141 yards across those five appearances.
\"It\'s hard to throw guys in at the end of the season and try to give him a huge role,\" Mahomes explained about Brown\'s limited production. \"I was happy to have him back at the end of the season and for him to kind of get back in within the offense.\"
Worthy, thrust into a larger role than anticipated as a rookie, led Chiefs receivers with 59 catches for 638 yards last season. He showed his big-play potential with two 50-yard receptions in Super Bowl LIX, albeit in a losing effort against Philadelphia.
Despite coming up short in their bid for a third consecutive championship, Mahomes sees tremendous potential in his receiving corps heading into 2025.
\"I think the offense has a chance to be really, really good,\" Mahomes said. \"The core group will be back in its entirety, so the goal is to try to build on it and get even better and try to get back to some of the explosive passing plays that we\'ve done in years past.\"
\"Everything looks great right now getting the guys back and healthy,\" Mahomes added. \"We\'ve got the guys. It\'s about me trusting them, making the throws downfield and letting them make plays.\"
