Some NFL Teams Though Quinn Ewers Too Famous To Be Backup QB

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun May 4, 2025 2:50 am

The Miami Dolphins selected former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers with the 228th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after the highly touted prospect unexpectedly slipped to the seventh round. According to Ewers\' agent, Jeff Slavin, teams passed on the quarterback because they viewed him as \"too big of a name to be a clipboard holder.\"

Prior to Miami\'s selection, Slavin was in communication with both the Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys as potential landing spots.

\"Maybe not as excited, but it\'s the same opportunity that every guy that was drafted in front of me is getting,\" Ewers said following his selection.

Draft Day Slide

Slavin expressed frustration about his client\'s unexpected fall, reaching out to \"half the league\" the day after the draft to understand what happened.

\"They thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,\" Slavin explained. \"Which I think is chickens---.\"

One unnamed personnel executive provided insight into the league\'s thinking: \"There\'s only so many reps to go around for young quarterbacks. You can justify it at other positions, but if you can\'t get a quarterback the amount of work to develop him, then you\'re almost wasting a pick.\"

Motivation From Fall

Ewers views his draft position as motivational fuel for his NFL career.

\"It\'s definitely a lot of motivation that comes with it, especially just being the last [quarterback] drafted,\" Ewers said. \"I still have the high expectations for myself, but just from the outside looking in, this is the first time in my life to not have that much expectation.\"

After leading Texas to the College Football Playoff semifinals with a signature overtime performance against Arizona State, Ewers was focused on his professional future.

\"I wanted to continue on my career path, and I know I\'m ready for the NFL,\" Ewers said. \"I think my game fits the NFL better than it does in college, honestly. I\'m ready for the next step.\"
