Jets Demonstrate Commitment To Justin Fields Through Draft Strategy

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon May 5, 2025 10:40 am

The New York Jets reinforced their commitment to quarterback Justin Fields by selecting three offensive players among their first four picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. The team\'s draft choices follow their earlier financial investment in Fields, who received a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed.

\"Listen, we want to surround Justin with good skill players, along with a good offensive line,\" first-year coach Aaron Glenn said. \"So any time you can do that within any offense, with any quarterback, man, that\'s an A-plus.\"

Draft Focused On Supporting Fields

The Jets selected right tackle Armand Membou in the first round, tight end Mason Taylor in the second, and wide receiver Arian Smith in the fourth round. These selections directly address offensive needs for a team looking to build around their new quarterback.

First-year general manager Darren Mougey acknowledged they \"talked about a lot of the quarterbacks\" but ultimately bypassed several available signal-callers on Day 3. The Jets did not select any quarterbacks with their seven draft picks, instead signing Missouri\'s Brady Cook as an undrafted free agent afterward.

A former Jets scout told ESPN that selecting a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders in the fourth round would have provided good value. However, the team\'s actions throughout the draft consistently signaled their intention to make Fields the clear starter.

\"I\'ve seen his contract,\" Mason Taylor said. \"They don\'t pay bad players that type of money, so he\'s a really good quarterback, and I can\'t wait to go work with him and work with the guys in New York.\"

Fields joins the Jets after stints with Chicago and Pittsburgh, showing improvement over his final 12 starts where he compiled an 8-4 record while averaging just 0.6 turnovers per start. This contrasts with his first 32 starts, where he went 6-26 with a 1.1 turnover average, according to ESPN Research.

Jets officials believe Fields can continue to develop in their system with improved offensive support. The quarterback will have established weapons in wide receiver Garrett Wilson, his former Ohio State teammate, and running back Breece Hall.
