Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter will transition to practicing on both sides of the ball by mid-week after spending his first training camp session exclusively on offense.
Coach Liam Coen announced that the team has developed a comprehensive practice schedule for Hunter throughout camp. The plan includes Hunter working at both receiver and cornerback positions during the same practice session within the first six workouts.
Structured Approach to Two-Way Development
The Jaguars initially focused Hunter on offense during OTAs and minicamp due to the complexity of learning route trees, checks, and audibles. Hunter did practice defense during one open OTA session and worked defensive periods during the final minicamp practice.
Coen emphasized that extended periods working only one position proved ineffective during spring sessions. The coaching staff learned that gaps between defensive and offensive work hindered Hunter\'s development on both sides.
\"You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense, and then give him an opportunity to go flip-flop within the same practice and then that will kind of become the norm,\" Coen said after the team\'s first workout at the Miller Electric Center.
The training camp schedule operates on three-day blocks with rest days, allowing coaches to map out Hunter\'s time more efficiently. Even on days when Hunter focuses primarily on one side of the ball, he will meet with coaches from the other unit at least once.
\"Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, it is accounted for and trying to make sure that we maximize his time, our time so that we can ultimately get the best outcome,\" Coen explained.
The systematic approach represents Jacksonville\'s commitment to developing Hunter as a legitimate two-way threat while ensuring he receives adequate preparation time for both positions.
