Baker Mayfield Eyes Extension After Career-Best Season with Buccaneers

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Yesterday 1:35 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is positioned for a contract extension following his career-best 2024 season, according to general manager Jason Licht. Mayfield posted personal bests with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and a 10-7 record in his first full season as the franchise quarterback.

Licht confirmed the organization\'s intention to extend Mayfield beyond his current three-year, $100 million deal. The GM emphasized the team\'s commitment to keeping Mayfield as their long-term solution at quarterback. No immediate plans exist to adjust the contract, but a strong 2025 start could accelerate discussions.

Mayfield\'s current average annual value of $33.3 million ranks 19th among NFL quarterbacks. Fifteen quarterbacks currently earn at least $45 million annually, with 11 in the $50 million range. His performance trajectory suggests significant earning potential in future negotiations.

The most realistic timeline for contractual discussions points to the 2026 offseason rather than immediate adjustments. Mayfield has expressed contentment with his current situation despite the financial disparity with peers. The 30-year-old quarterback transformed from a $4.5 million prove-it deal in 2023 to his current contract status.

\"I love Baker. I love everything he\'s done for us,\" Licht told The Athletic. \"The goal for us is for Baker to continue to be the player that he is, and at some point, we reach an extension when the time is right and he continues to be our quarterback for a long time.\"

Mayfield has set championship expectations for the upcoming season despite coaching changes. Former offensive coordinator Liam Coen departed for Jacksonville, but new coordinator Josh Grizzard will maintain much of the existing system. Mayfield has worked extensively with Grizzard during the offseason to ensure continuity.

\"I\'m trying to win a Super Bowl,\" Mayfield said. \"We\'re trying to win the whole thing. That\'s the team we have. I think we can win it all.\"
