Jets Bench Justin Fields, Name Tyrod Taylor Starting QB For Week 12

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has benched starting quarterback Justin Fields in favor of longtime backup Tyrod Taylor. Taylor, 36, will start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, the team that drafted him in 2011.

Glenn informed the team of the quarterback change in their Monday meeting following the mini bye. The move comes after Fields passed for only 116 yards in the Jets\' 27-14 loss to New England last Thursday.

Fields ranks 30th out of 33 qualified passers in Total QBR at 37.7 this season. He has thrown seven touchdown passes and one interception while passing for 1,259 yards in 10 games.

The Jets\' passing attack ranks 32nd in the NFL at 139.9 yards per game. Fields has produced only 505 passing yards in his past five starts.

\"Obviously, we have to do a better job in the passing game, and that has a lot to do with Justin getting the ball to the right guys,\" Glenn said Friday.

Fields was replaced at halftime in a Week 7 loss to Carolina. Glenn was leaning toward Taylor as his new starter at that point, according to sources, but Taylor was scratched before Week 8 due to a knee injury.

Fields responded with his best performance of the season against Cincinnati, throwing for 502 total yards. The strong showing came days after public criticism from owner Woody Johnson.

Fields is under contract through 2026 after signing a two-year, $40 million deal in March. He is due $20 million in 2026, including $10 million guaranteed, with a $23 million cap charge.

The Jets hold the fifth position in the 2026 draft with a 2-8 record. They own two first-round picks in 2026 and three more in 2027 following recent trades of Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams.

Taylor has started one game this season, a Week 3 loss to Tampa Bay when Fields was out with a concussion. His career record as a starter is 28-29-1.
