Stars Eye Plano For New Arena When Splitting From Mavs In 2031

The Dallas Stars are targeting Plano as a leading candidate for a new arena after the team\'s lease at American Airlines Center expires in 2031. The Stars\' 21-person ownership advisory group met Wednesday and identified Plano as the likeliest destination, according to Front Office Sports.

The Stars and Mavericks have shared American Airlines Center since 2001. The Mavericks, owned by the Adelson family since 2023, are planning a separate arena and casino project that excludes the Stars.

Dallas is eyeing a land purchase in Plano but has not finalized any agreements. The team already operates a youth hockey facility in Plano and maintains a practice facility in nearby Frisco.

Arlington remains in the mix as an alternative location approximately 20 miles from the current arena. Arlington already hosts MLB\'s Texas Rangers and the NFL\'s Dallas Cowboys, creating potential synergies.

Team ownership has not ruled out remaining in Dallas, either at American Airlines Center or in a newly constructed venue. Stars owner Tom Gaglardi stated last spring he was \"pretty confident\" the Dallas Metroplex could support two arenas.

\"I don\'t deny we are in discussions with Plano,\" Stars president and CEO Brad Alberts told Front Office Sports. \"Have we decided on where our future is? No. We\'ve gotta decide, are we staying or are we going to build somewhere.\"

Alberts emphasized the importance of surrounding real estate development, citing The Battery Atlanta as a model.

\"We are looking for acreage where we can develop what I call 365-degree revenue,\" Alberts said.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman addressed the situation in May, noting the Mavericks\' arena plans would not affect the Stars\' operations. The Stars have reached the playoffs six of the last seven seasons, including three consecutive Western Conference finals appearances.

The Dallas Metroplex ranks as the fourth-largest U.S. media market. Mavericks CEO Rick Welts, a Basketball Hall of Famer, is leading the team\'s arena and casino development efforts.
