Despite a preseason vote of confidence from ownership, the Flyers fired head coach Peter Laviolette Monday after an 0-3 start, according to an ESPN.com report.

The Flyers made the announcement at a morning news conference, less than a day after Philadelphia lost 2-1 to the Hurricanes.

"This is just a gut feeling on my part," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said. " Right now, we're not playing the way we have to play ... that's got to change."

LOL incredibly unprofessional - and shortsighted - on Holmgren's part.
PL takes them to the cup finals, and into the playoffs 3 straight seasons. Last year in a shortened season they have a slight hiccup (winning record but miss playoffs) and 3 games into the season he gets canned??? what a joke.

If/when the flyers continue to struggle, or come up short, there is not much left for the GM to point a finger at. Time will tell if this hasty firing will put the bullseye square on Holmgren's back - which it should be already considering the roster he has let slip away...

Mike Richards gone
Jeff Carter gone
Danny Briere gone
James Van Riemsdyk gone
Jaromir Jagr gone
Sergei Babrovsky gone

not surprisingly, the team is struggling to score - 3 goals in 3 games
