Flyers To Play In New South Philadelphia Arena In 2031

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Jan 13, 2025 10:07 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers will partner with Comcast Spectacor, their current landlord, to build a new arena in South Philadelphia and abandon a deal with the city to move downtown.

The stunning reversal comes as a relief to critics of the plan to put a $1.3 billion arena near City Hall at the edge of Chinatown. Mayor Cherelle Parker, on Monday, called the proposal \"a win, win, win, win for Philadelphia.\"

Sure, Mayor Parker!

Win for the NFL (yes the NFL, because the Sixers owner also owns the Commanders) and the NBA in appeasing their TV broadcast partner.

Win for the Flyers, getting a brand new arena they don't really deserve.

Win for NIMBY Philadelphians, as yet again any kind of progress or development is shouted down into oblivion.

Absolute win for Comcast, first by getting the leagues to back them and pressure Sixer ownership, then by getting 50% ownership of a brand new arena when they would have had 0%, and then also by buying back into the Sixers as a minority shareholder.

As a fan, it's an absolute loss because the "stadium complex" is a soulless parking lot completely lacking any character. No other city has one as far as I know and that's for good reason.
