Sharks Owner Endorses Grier Rebuild, Criticizes Wilson Era Decisions

San Jose Sharks owner Hasso Plattner praised general manager Mike Grier\'s systematic rebuild while criticizing former GM Doug Wilson\'s draft record and contract decisions during a 25-minute conversation with local media before the 2025-26 season opener.

Plattner revealed he wanted to begin a complete rebuild five years ago, but the previous front office rejected that vision. The team last made the playoffs in 2019 and has languished near the bottom of the NHL standings since.

\"That was actually my wish five years ago, and quote unquote, the previous front office said, that\'s not their vision,\" Plattner said.

Plattner highlighted the difference between Wilson\'s approach and Grier\'s current strategy, particularly in the draft. He pointed to wasted high picks under Wilson, including Thomas Bordeleau, whom he described as being \"in love with the puck.\"

\"The biggest difference to the Wilson team, Grier and his team are drafting better,\" Plattner said. \"I\'m so happy about Macklin Celebrini, how he can do everything, but he does everything possible for the other players, for his partners on the ice. He is a leader.\"

The Sharks owner expressed confidence that the team would not need to draft first overall again, specifically mentioning top 2026 prospect Gavin McKenna. Both Grier and coach Ryan Warsofsky assured him the team aims to avoid that scenario.

Plattner revealed that Tomas Hertl personally asked to be traded after 10 years with the organization, citing three knee injuries and a desire to compete for a Stanley Cup. The owner admitted regretting the departure of the popular forward.

\"Tomas, we let you go, which I regret, because I really liked him and we always had fun together and joked,\" Plattner said.

He also questioned Wilson\'s decision to extend Hertl on a long-term contract, noting Wilson had previously told him he disliked such deals. Other players like Brent Burns, Timo Meier, and Erik Karlsson also departed during the rebuild.

Plattner indicated the team would spend to the salary cap once the rebuild shows progress, but emphasized the need for improved attendance at SAP Center. He acknowledged financial constraints are not an issue personally.

\"I hope that the fans support me a little bit and come to the arena,\" Plattner said. \"If we are playing better, and if there is this steady trajectory up to a competitive team, then that shouldn\'t be a problem.\"

The Sharks reached a new lease agreement to remain at SAP Center until at least 2051. Plattner dismissed any serious consideration of relocating the franchise.
