Giving up Tyson Chandler (who was the DPOY the following year) turned the NBA Champs into a first round team.

lol, why is everyone voting yes, they struck out on their 3 top free agent targets; cp3, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, the latter didn't even want to have a free agency discussion with them at all. They basically dismantled a championship calibre team that with a few tweaks could have arguably gone to the finals in the 2011-12 season. Lebron Choking maybe the reason they won the title but people forget that dallas team spanked an okc team with harden 4-1 in the 2011 western conference finals.

Since then they've struck out on every free agent they have wanted and then they've fallen back and signed the best of the rest of the free agents that would go there. That's not much of a strategy.
They haven't been able to find anyone special in the draft or make any decent trades or do much of anything, what's to like? Cuban's a great owner but the team is kind of like a guy clutching onto the windowsill while dangling from the 40 story building of Dirk's career. They are going to fall soon enough and when they crash it won't be pretty because they have no young talent at all so we are talking a complete rebuild from scratch or square one or ground zero.

I think that Cuban is getting the thumbs up because he's doing quite well with the pieces he has got... and especially how he recovered from being rejected by CP3, D-Wil and Howard.
This franchise has been making the playoffs for years, but really, with Dirk getting older they need to find a new identity...

That was the smart gamble to make though. Teams that win in free agency signings (Houston, Miami) do well. It's a good way to go. Like the Knicks giving up 2 draft picks for a washed up Tracy McGrady, you do what you have to to clear space for the big free agent. It's a smart play even if it doesn't work out. And a lot of people think the Mavs got a little lucky to get that title. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that they won it cause I hate LeBooboo, but they weren't a favorite to repeat even their conference much less wining it all. It was the right play.

It's hard to believe cuban of all people didn't go all in to try to repeat. Would've been a fun season to watch.

He could eat his cake and had it too....sign Tyson Chandler and use him as an asset to acquire D.Howard, the same way Lakers did using Bynum.
Also, in the pitch meeting for Deron Williams, M. Cuban didn't show up because he was recording some "shark tank" tv show....disappointing.

Just like the Knicks and Nets, except Cuban actually won that way.

Valid points. The "sign the guy to trade him / don't sign him" is a fair argument. I didn't really have a problem with Cuban's choice, but I see your point.
