Go for it NBA - sweet 16 is why NCAA tournament is more beloved then then the NBA playoffs.

No the Sweet 16 is more beloved because its a 1 game situation... anything can happen.... this doesnt change any of that

Of course it would be better if the 16 best teams would reach the play-offs, but it takes away most of the reasons why this "geographic" differentiator is in place in the first place. You play against the teams more that are nearest to you and it does make a difference. A team from a weaker conference might take the place of a team from the tougher conference in this scenario... Just because they had the better schedule due to the weaker competition.

In a void, the top 16 teams should make the play-offs, but the games are not played in a void. That first round matchup of LA versus NY could easily knock down the team out in the second round just due to travel fatigue, especially if the first round goes to 6-7 games long. We don't need any more "outside of the basketball court" distractions than we already have...

This. 100%. Upsets are so few and far between in the NBA playoffs.
