Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland in a deal worth up to $43.3 million. The 19-year-old has signed a contract through 2030 and will be available for this summer\'s Club World Cup in the United States.
Dortmund will pay an upfront fee of approximately $38 million for Bellingham, with additional add-ons potentially making this their record signing. If triggered, the total fee would surpass what was paid for Ousmane Dembele in 2016. Sunderland retain a 15 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
The midfielder will wear number 77 and join Dortmund for the Club World Cup, where they face Fluminense on June 17. The German side will also meet Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD in group play. Bellingham\'s participation means he will miss England\'s European Under-21 Championship.
\"We\'re delighted that we were able to complete this deal before the FIFA Club World Cup so that we can see Jobe in our colours for the first time in the USA,\" said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. \"He\'s fit as a fiddle and raring to go – he\'s determined to forge his own path at Borussia Dortmund and make his mark on how we play, and we\'re confident that he will do exactly that.\"
Bellingham follows his older brother Jude, who joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020. The younger Bellingham also came through Birmingham\'s academy before establishing himself at Sunderland over two seasons.
The transfer represents Sunderland\'s record sale, surpassing Jordan Pickford\'s 2017 move to Everton. Bellingham was a regular starter as Sunderland won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2024-25.
\"Your support, on so many occasions, has completely blown me away, especially in the times of adversity which we pulled through together,\" Bellingham said in his farewell message to Sunderland supporters. \"You welcomed me with open arms as a kid leaving home for the first time, and I am proud that our relationship has grown to be so strong ever since.\"
