Diogo Jota Crash Inquiry Points To Excessive Speed, Tire Puncture

Spanish authorities have released initial findings into the fatal car crash that killed Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva near Zamora. The investigation suggests excessive speed and a possible tire puncture contributed to the Lamborghini leaving the road and bursting into flames.

Spain\'s Guardia Civil issued an update Tuesday through its Zamora branch and traffic division. The statement confirmed investigators are studying tread marks left by the vehicle\'s wheels while examining the crash site on the A-52 dual-carriageway.

\"Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road,\" the Guardia Civil statement read. \"All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota.\"

The Athletic previously reported investigators were working on a theory that the car suffered a puncture to one of its rear tyres while overtaking a truck. This would have caused the vehicle to veer off the road and into the central reservation before catching fire.

Liverpool Players Return to Training

Liverpool players began returning to the club\'s Kirkby training base Tuesday for the first time since the tragedy. Many had attended the funeral of Jota and Silva three days previously, with flowers and banners left outside the training ground gates.

The expert report will be handed to the court in Puebla de Sanabria once completed. Liverpool\'s first pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday remains uncertain following the tragedy.

Mohamed Salah previously described his fear of returning to training without his teammate.

\"Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break,\" Salah said. \"It\'s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won\'t be there when we go back.\"
